My phone died today. This is really bad because like most people in IT and crypto I use it a lot for 2 factor authentication. I am now in the process of restoring my phone and getting access to my accounts. This process is anxiety inducing but because I have good documentation will be successful.

Public service announcement

Please make sure,

  • You know the PIN of your phone and any spare phone that you might want to use (put a sticky label on it).
  • You know the username and password of the Google account used by your phone (if Android) and
    • ALL account recovery options are set
  • You have backed up all the 2FA accounts stored in Google Authenticator (if possible), Authy and Microsoft Authenticator (if possible)
  • You know the username and password of your Microsoft account.
    • ALL account recovery options are set

If you are in crypto you will be using a hardware wallet like a Ledger or Trezor. Make sure,

  • You have the seed stored in two separate secure locations – ideally where you don’t have any access for 48 hours.
