  • List files, directories and sizes at the command prompt

Any Windows system administrator frequently has to find out why a disk is full and my favourite tool for this is Windirstat. Unfortunately Windirstat does not easily allow you to export the results to a CSV file for analysis. I intend to import the CSV file into Excel and then create a pivot table that…

  • How to manage your photographs

A challenge that I face at home and increasingly at work is how to best to manage digital media. Digital media includes photographs and videos (and some other viewable stuff) but in this post I will concentrate on digital photographs. My new favourite acronym is “CASE”, Copy And Steal Everything and as usual other people…

  • How make long words and URLs wrap

I had a very long URL to display and I could not make it wrap. If you search this issue you will find lots of advice but it took me a long time to find a solution that worked for me. In the end I had to make a class and apply it to a <pre…

  • Turn your laptop into a WiFi hotspot

I travel to client’s offices and sometimes I might have a wired network connection but no WiFi connection. This sometimes happens when the WiFi is strongly secured or no-one knows the password. In this case it is really useful to be able to turn my laptop into a WiFi hotspot so I can use my…

  • Free markets are an antidote to taste discrimination

I have previously written about the detrimental effects of rational discrimination in employment. While this makes good sense for any one employer and his employees (because no-one wants an unproductive colleague) it is damaging to every employer and employee because it reduces the number and skills of possible employees. The opposite of rational discrimination (irrational discrimination) is…

  • Visual Management – where Lean meets Agile

My current role has strategic, project and operational duties. Although these are very different disciplines there is a common management challenge, We don’t need an accurate document, we need a shared understanding @jeffpatton at Agile 2012 In agile project management we use Cockburn’s information radiators but these have a much longer history as “visual management” boards…

I have never really understood Sharepoint. This brilliant introduction from Lynda.com gives the helicopter view.

  • How access a laptop or phone camera in a web page

It is now possible to access a laptop or phone camera using a web page and standard HTML5. This is amazing. There is documentation and a working example here. Check it out, it worked for me. http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/getusermedia/intro/ —(update 2015-02-07 20:08)— This works in Chrome on PC and Android phone. It does not work in IE…

  • Hack to create buttons in PayPal sandbox

I have just spent 5 hours trying to create test buttons in the PayPal sandbox but it keeps diverting me to the live site. The web is full of people with the same issue and it was reported in June 2012. However there is a workaround. PayPal’s response, Re: Paypal sandbox – merchant tab takes…

  • Why you will need a new desktop one day

The basic problem for PC manufacturers is that there is no reason to replacement. Most PCs will now happily run Microsoft Office and process video. What more do you need? Microsoft’s (possible) response, 3D everywhere; 3D interfaces (think Kinect), 3D printing and 3D visualisations. There is a good article here, http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/01/29/windows_10_heralds_the_minecraftisation_of_microsoft/
