  • How to style HTML emails

Email clients such as Outlook and Gmail have their own ways of rendering HTML. Most importantly you have to use inline styles on every element and cannot link to an external stylesheet or have a stylesheet in the head. So rather than having a simple declaration in the head like, <head> <style> body {margin: 0;…

  • Windows 10 USB headset microphone issues

To cut a very long story short. The plug and play installation of the driver failed. It was necessary to manually install the default driver in the Windows 10 distribution. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/fix-sound-problems#v1h=tab01

  • Why middle-aged men should avoid beautiful women (on Linked-in)

The recent case of the young and rather comely Charlotte Proudman inviting the middle-aged Alexander Carter-Silk to connect to her on Linked-in and then publishing his private response is unusual but instructive. Middle-aged men should be aware that when attractive young ladies send them invitations on social networks it is because they want something. The…

  • Fix for slow or hanging right click button

My daughter upgraded her Lenovo laptop to Windows 10 (hint – don’t do this until Christmas) and I spend several hours finding and installing drivers so it would work smoothly again. Having done so I found that the right-click button was very slow on the desktop. The problem was cased by the right-click button having…

  • How to connect to your Outlook.com contacts and calendar on an Android phone

As a freelancer I like to use the powerful Desktop Outlook client to manage my calendar and contacts. Unfortunately this stores all its data in .pst files which are very unreliable. It is far better to use web based calendaring and contact management. To do this but still use Desktop Outlook I am in the…

  • Should you use Outlook on Android – No

I take the pain so you don’t have to. Outlook for Android  does not work well. I drank the Microsoft Koolaid of “Office on any device” and moved all my email accounts on my Android phone from the stock email client over to the Outlook App. This has many faults * html in emails does…

  • Recent apps button does not work after lollipop upgrade on Samsung Galaxy Alpha

When I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy Alpha from KitKat to Lollipop (Android 5.0.2) I found that the left soft-button that launches “Recent Apps” no longer functioned. I also found that I could not fill in forms in Copilot GPS and some other applications. This was fixed by ticking Settings > Display > Increase Touch Sensitivity…

  • Windows Explorer is dead – OneDrive on the web is king

Microsoft really, really get the cloud. Windows 10 is a “Cloud first” operating system and as it matures and the interactions with Office 365 become ever smoother we are going to see great things. Dropbox has lead the way in cloud storage and it is almost perfect. Microsoft is playing catchup and has the disadvantage…

  • Use Firefox not Edge if you only have 2 GB RAM

The best browser for 2 GB Windows 10 laptops is Firefox. Edge uses even more memory than Chrome, therefore use Firefox on low RAM devices such as the HP Stream 13. I have been testing Windows 10 on an HP Stream 13 using the Edge browser for the last week. I have seen high memory…

  • Upgrading to Windows 10 may break Outlook 2013

I upgraded my HP Stream 13 to Windows 10. After a day or so I started Outlook 2013 and found that I could not send emails. After several frustrating hours I found out that this is a known issue. http://www.msoutlook.info/question/cannot-send-after-windows-10-upgrade and the fix is described in the link above.
